A few days after selecting ‘Umar to be the next khalifah, Abu Bakr died at the age of 63, as had his beloved master and friend Muhammad. After the funeral prayers (salat ul-janaza) were performed, his body was laid to rest next to that of the Messenger of Allah. Even though Abu Bakr ruled for only two years, they were years of consolidation and strengthening for the new community and its government. They were two years in which a clear decision was made to develop a powerful state out of what had been a small collection of disunited tribes, villages and towns.
When the Prophet died many thought that Islam would only continue to exist as a local faith practiced by the unconstrained and independent Arabs. Abu Bakr's vision, however, went far beyond this, and his legacy was in meeting the early challenges that would have resulted in the collapse of Islamic unity had they gone unchecked. Through his resolute action, the first khalifah held together those whose lives had been inspired by the Prophet and returned to the fold of those who apostatized by demanding that loyalty to Ummah supercede loyalty to tribe. His resolve truly set the stage for the expansion that was to come.
